Pigs are some of the most unique farm animals out there. Contrary to popular belief, pigs are very different than how the mainstream perceives them to be. Let's take a closer look at 10 fun facts about these amazing, intelligent creatures!
The Surprising Facts
Pigs are extremely smart! They have excellent memories. They can remember things for years and can recognize and remember objects.
Pigs are much more tolerant of cold weather than of hot. Pigs have no sweat glands, so they can’t sweat. This is why they bathe in mud-to keep themselves cool. 🐖
Pigs use grunts to communicate with each other. The grunts may vary depending on the pig’s personality and can convey information about the welfare of the animal. They sure are talkers! 🗣
Ever wondered how fast pigs can run? Surprisingly, they're not slow animals at all! Adult pigs can run at speeds of up to 11mph, or in other words, a seven-minute mile. (That's faster than me!😆)
A pig's squeal can be as loud as 115 decibels – that’s 3 decibels higher than the sound of a supersonic airliner.
Pigs will eat almost anything. They're obligate omnivores, so they can process both plant and animal foods. Perhaps this is where the saying, "you eat like a pig!" comes from. 🐷
Did you know that pigs can DREAM? ✨Studies have proven that, like humans, they dream vividly.
The genetic makeup of pigs is also similar to our own. Stem cells from pigs are being used by scientists to research cures for human diseases.
Mother pigs sing to their babies while nursing.🎶 How sweet! Newborn piglets learn to run towards their mothers’ voices. ☺️
10. Last but not least, pigs can SWIM! 😱 On the uninhabited Bahaman Island of Big Major Cay, that’s exactly what they do. A population of wild aquatic swine rules the island. 😎
Summary
We've had pigs on our farm for a number of years now. They're an absolute joy! Pigs are also natural laborers and help get work done on the farm. For example, when cow manure builds up in the pasture, farmers often toss corn over the fields and send the pigs in to graze. As the pigs eat the corn, they simultaneously push the manure into the soil which naturally fertilizes the land. Isn't that amazing? No technological equipment needed! 🤠
Pasture-Raised Pork🥩
Sustainably raised pasture-raised pork is one of the most decadent meats out there and has many health benefits. For example, pasture raised pigs have 74% more selenium than pigs raised on factory farms. Selenium needs Vitamin E to work as antioxidant; antioxidants like selenium help fight damaging particles in the body known as free radicals. This makes pasture-raised pork such an amazing food!
We sell a variety of pork, including ground pork, pork chops, and our best-selling pastured pork pan sausage.
