Our family farm, Grassfield Farm, is located in Hondo, Texas which is about 50 miles west of San Antonio. We farm the old-fashioned way like our grandparents did. We are 100% Certified AWA Grass-Fed, Animal Welfare Approved, and use absolutely no chemicals, pesticides, or additives ever. We sell 100% grass-fed and finished beef, pasture-raised pork, and farm fresh eggs. Allow us to introduce you to our precious animals!
1. Cows
Our cows are the backbone of our farming enterprise. For the past 30 years we have crossed a multitude of breeds including Angus, Hereford, Wagu, Santa Gertrudis, longhorn, and others. Unfortunately, many of the breeds today have been breed for feedlot efficiency. We are constantly trying to re-gain the original heritage breed benefits like grass efficiency and adaptability to their natural environment; in our case, Texas heat & grasses. We operate & manage a herd year round of approximately 100 cows & 100 yearlings. We are constantly selecting & trying to improve the process to result in the healthiest, happiest cows and the highest-quality grass-fed beef.
2. Pigs
Did you know that pigs are actually very clean and smart animals? Pigs thrive in cold weather; warm weather is harder for them to handle since they do not have any sweat glands and can't sweat. So to cool off, they play in the mud. Aren't they just the cutest?
They make for the most delicious pasture-raised pork, too. Check out our recent pork pan sausage breakfast casserole recipe here.
3. Chickens
Our pasture-raised chickens make delicious farm fresh eggs. Their main source of diet is pasture, and they love grazing alongside the longhorns, as shown below. We are in the process of rebuilding our laying hen operation, rebuilding aged chicken shelters, hatching new layers, and hoping to have farm fresh eggs for sale again this fall.
4. Goats
As a Mother's Day gift a few years back, we surprised Jana with milking goats! Our goats are our dearest pets. Goats are fascinating creatures with very distinct, friendly personalities. We love having them. We do not sell any goat meat or goat dairy products.
Fun fact, one of our relatives farms sheep, and unfortunately a newborn lamb lost her momma. We decided to take the lamb in and nurse her ourselves. She lives among the goats, and now that she's grown up with them, she thinks she is a goat!
5. Donkey
Ass bustin' farm work. (Seriously! 😆) Donkeys are amazing creatures that help us ward off dangerous predators and maintain the land. We are so thankful for them!
6. Farm Dogs
Meet our farm dogs! Our four rescue dogs, Ollie, Kit, Toby, and Sam, work hard protecting and patrolling the pastures from any predators. Our livestock is so grateful for such a devoted team!
7. Barn Cats
Last, but not least, meet our barn cats: aka the official mouse patrol crew.
Summary
Our animals aren't just our pets, they're our family. We are so grateful for each and every one of them. They work hard make our farm run smoothly and beautifully. The cows graze and maintain the grass, pigs act as natural fertilizers, chickens are experts at tilling soil, goats eat the bristles and weeds, donkeys and dogs protect the livestock, and cats patrol the land!
It's all smiles over here. :)
